Independent advisers
Independent advisers recommend based on an assessment of your circumstances, needs and objectives. They can advise across a wide range of planning needs and products from across the market. They are not wedded to a single company or plan type.
Restricted advisers
Restricted advisers will only recommend products from a single provider, a limited range of providers, or potentially in one specific area where they specialise. As such, they do not have the flexibility or range of options that you might well need.
Financial coaches
Financial coaches may offer guidance and general information, but they cannot advise. They are not regulated. This means if things go wrong, you may not be able to complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
Robo-advisers
Robo-advisers are digital platforms that carry a high level of automation, using algorithms to help people narrow down options that are suitable. As such, perhaps this service should really be called robo-guidance. They can offer a cheaper form of implementation, but do not offer any value from human interaction. They tend to be unable to deal with more complex issues.
As Citizens Advice notes ‘it is usually best to get independent advice so that you can look at the widest range of advice and products available.
